One of the first things anyone moving to a small town has to engage in is a little home renovation. And every skill comes with a contractor. Since you see these people frequently, they quickly can become your initial circle of acquaintances. But beware: that's a bad circle of friends.
Nothing against tradesmen, but they have a vested stake in being your buddy: you are paying them for the honor. The more you get friendly with them, the more costly and longer the renovation will become. You need to treat them as employees with a job to do, not some sort of eccentric companion like the Newhart Show.
Secondly, they seldom are the type of folks that you want your family hanging around with. Some have pretty bad dark sides. We had a painter who worked half the day, and drank the rest. This is not your dream circle of friends.
So remember to stay well-rounded in your friends. You need to immediately be pursuing get-togethers with people from your kids' school or from church or your neighbors. Don't let the contractors become your new, and only, circle of friends.
Your family will thank you, and so will your pocketbook!
